On the Horizon at WildBlue

We are thrilled to be launching our weekly eZine, the latest development in our process of building a dynamic and interactive community at WildBlue. The eZine keeps readers up to date on developments at WBP and even puts their voices at the center of the conversation with our “Ask A Detective” and “Ask An Author” series. The eZine gives subscribers exclusive and early access to new blog content, contests and events such as author-hosted book club meetings. Series such as “True Crime 101,” explore crime stats, breakthroughs in laboratory science, criminal psychology and more through illuminating graphics, videos and anecdotes from the field.

Author Spotlight

John Ferak

This week’s featured author is John Ferak, author of hit new release DIXIE’S LAST STAND.

John is an accomplished journalist and family man whose longstanding interest in “writing about the darker things in life,” has culminated in a successful transition into writing true crime books. John has worked extensively throughout the American Midwest where fans have a special investment in his stories;

“Over the past several weeks, many people around the country have pressed me time and time again, wondering when DIXIE would be available in paperback, especially folks who live back in Iowa, where the case originated. I hope that all readers of DIXIE take the time to post a review of the book on Amazon or on Goodreads when they’re finished. I also urge everybody to strongly consider reading other books from WildBlue Press. We have quite a collection of top-notch and New York best-selling authors and our fan base continues to climb.”

John is an enthusiastic member of the WildBlue team who loves to hear from fans. As any good journalist, he paints a vivid depiction of the events in each crime story and asks the reader to cast the final judgment.

Ask a Detective

Our “ask a detective” series will be a regular feature and one of many opportunities for WildBlue enthusiasts to interact with the people behind the stories. We want to bring you closer to the investigative and scientific work involved in solving criminal cases.

This week’s question is from Charlotte Ellis:

“Have you ever thought about or wanted to impose your version of justice upon a suspect?” Thanks for your question, Charlotte. For an answer, we contacted

Det. Bradley Nickell of the Las Vegas Police Department:

Bradley Nickell

“Cops are human, really no different than the average person. We all have thoughts about justice and injustice, just as you–feelings that some criminal might need a good dose of “justice” that our sometimes broken court system won’t provide. But those desires or thoughts have never translated into action for me because I took an oath; an oath all police officers have taken which the overwhelming vast majority of us take very seriously. Sure, you’ll find a bad apple from time to time, but our profession is probably the best in the world at identifying our own bad apples and removing them. Good cops are pleased when bad cops are exposed and removed, while at the same time, even more disturbed than the public about it because we have to wear the stain of their misconduct on our own reputations.”

We look forward to receiving your questions!

Bizarre But True

In this week’s Bizarre but true: five crazy laws that are still enforceable in certain states. These laws have been deemed crazy either for being very outdated or for prohibiting seemingly obvious, common-senses infractions.

  1. The first law comes from Utah (32A-12-207) where it is illegal to sell or supply alcohol during an emergency (www.dumblaws.com). You have to wonder about the originating circumstances for this law.  An opportunistic vendor? An inappropriate onlooker?
  2. Moving on to South Dakota, we have a sensible law to prevent cheese-related mishaps: in South Dakota it is illegal to fall asleep in a cheese factory (moveto.com/southdakota).
  3. While they may seem silly, at least the previous two laws are intended to enforce public safety. This law from Michigan seems to be nothing more than a holdover from a less progressive time. Careful ladies, in Michigan: a woman may not cut her hair without her husband’s permission (http://www.instantcheckmate.com/crimewire).
  4. In Oklahoma we have a potential case of animal protection gone too far: a person can get arrested for making ugly faces at a dog. If you ask me, the dog is best equipped to dole out justice in this case. (http://www.bjattorneys.com/strange-but-true-laws).
  5. Finally, if you had any strange subterranean plans this evening and you live in South Carolina, you should know that it is illegal to crawl in the sewer without a permit! (http://www.bjattorneys.com/strange-but-true-laws)
