I am excited about being a part of “Explore Memphis 2017” at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library because I get to share my new book “She is Evil!” And I can spend the day in a library.
My mom was single, a working mom Monday-Friday. The weekend was our own. Because we did not have a lot of money, we spent time visiting low-cost or free venues. My favorite was the library. We took the bus to the McCreless Branch Library and spend hours perusing the shelves, seeing a free show, and checking out books. Sometimes I wondered, what would it be like to see my name on one of these books? I still remember the euphoric feeling of having a library card. Sometimes we would sit at the long, wide tables in the adult section and read silently; I was scooting forward in the big, stiff, wooden chair, my feet dangling. In school I learned the Dewey Decimal system, and library trips were a bright light in the doldrums of arithmetic and science. Now, in my 50’s, just driving by a library can give me a warm feeling and yearning for the simple pleasures, like watching the librarian type my name onto a little square of cardboard, my access to adventure.
So now I get to spend another day at the library! I am proud to be a part of the Explore Memphis kickoff party on June 2nd from 11:00pm to 3:00pm at the beautiful Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, where I did quite a bit of research on my new book “She is Evil!” I will be presenting 1:30-2:30pm in Meeting Room A. For a schedule of all events see here.
The mission of Explore Memphis is to motivate participants to read and learn during the summer through engaging programs, creative partnerships, and free resources for a more literate Memphis. Explore Memphis takes place June 1 to July 31 in all Memphis libraries. The theme is “How to build a better world.” The events are free and open to the public.
I am so happy to be part of the Explore Memphis kickoff party. I hope to see a lot of little girls there with their parent, eyes wide as they peruse the books. I will wonder if they are thinking, what would it be like to see my name on one of these books?
