Unaware that it’s about to be thrust into the middle of a centuries-old cosmic conflict, Earth discovers an unknown object spotted near Pluto, followed by another on Mars. A team of experts on the maiden flight of a first-of-its-kind spaceship are sent to investigate.
Sabotage threatens the mission and the security of the United States as the president and his advisors search for solutions. With enemies on fronts both terrestrial and otherwise, the stakes soon become apparent to a nation embroiled in a conflict unlike anything it has faced before.
Far from Earth, Major Blake Thompson and his specialized SEAL team investigate the strange objects. As the nature of the threat is uncovered and the stakes continue to mount, they risk everything to prevent the world from a catastrophic level of destruction that would change the course of humanity forever. Yet even if they succeed, at what cost?
From The Book:
“What are your orders, Sir? The revived crewmembers are moving to their battle stations, but we are not even at fifty percent combat readiness yet. The Klaxx will be on us in seconds.”
“By Glysst, Lieutenant, we will not fail Cjar! Ready the Q-PAMS again!”
“The Q-PAMS? We don’t have time to re-enter the G-Cells,” screamed Lieutenant Pfssiast with a cracking voice, still impacted by the G-Cell revival process. “The gravity well of the two ships is approaching 0.1 G’s and we aren’t even in G-suits, let alone our G-Cells. We can’t …”
“Ready it now, Lieutenant. It’s our only option – dead or alive. Punch it, NOW! That’s an order, Lieutenant!”
Without further hesitation, the Lieutenant punched the Q-PAMS emergency activation button. Although Captain Blissiart knew the outcome, he could not allow the highly secret Jarisst I to fall into Klaxxstinian hands. It was the right decision. It was the only decision. It was also the last decision the Captain would ever make. In the blink of an eye, the ship accelerated past the battle cruisers, reaching a pre-programmed 500 G’s. Standing crewmembers were violently thrown off their feet – killed instantly from the impact on internal ship structures, and the failing of internal organs under the enormous and sudden acceleration. As this was the first time the emergency system had ever been activated, no one, including the captain, knew what the outcome would be, but it was clear that one of the brightest Cjarian minds in the past 300 years, Captain Blissiart, had just ended his brilliant career much earlier than planned.

I thoroughly enjoyed Happenstance, it kept me fully interested and engaged with an exciting storyline. And it doesn’t take a huge science fiction buff to appreciate how great this story really is. The characters became well developed throughout the book with meaningful and significant issues that could be relatable to all. I also liked getting to know the complex personalities of each individual. Happenstance by Phil Sheehan is a very thought provoking story, Artisan Book Reviews definitely recommends it and we can’t wait for a sequel!
