On Sunday morning, I fly back to Omaha, Nebraska. My old stomping grounds. Where I lived and worked for nine years. But don’t expect to see me around Omaha very much over those next few days.
I’ll be staying in Lincoln, where I’m one of the presenters at this year’s 2015 Nebraska League of Municipalities Midwinter Conference. The event takes place at the Cornhusker Hotel, not too far from the state capital. I’m giving two presentations on Monday related to my book, BLOODY LIES: A CSI SCANDAL IN THE HEARTLAND. Specifically, I will address the fallout and lessons that can be drawn by other Nebraska municipalities as a result of the sad, tragic double murder case that I covered in Murdock, Nebraska. Primarily, my talk will center on the civil liabilities angle.
Since July, 2014, I’ve given close to 20 presentations and talks related to BLOODY LIES. Monday’s event will probably be in front of my largest audiences. Around 300 city officials are expected to be on hand for the conference. My presentations are back to back and the audience will likely consist of city managers, city administrators, elected officials, police chiefs and maybe several police officers.
The following day, I travel to Peru State College in Nemaha County, where I’ve agreed to give a series of day-long presentations for students, faculty and the public about the writing of BLOODY LIES. Peru State College officials contacted me last year after reading my column that was published in The PRAIRIE FIRE, a statewide Nebraska newspaper that is known as The Progressive Voice of the Great Plains.
Peru State College is nestled in southeastern Nebraska, between Nebraska City and Auburn, and it’s close proximity to Cass County, which was the backdrop for the story in my book. For more details about my presentations at the college, click here: http://www.peru.edu/media/news/15/2/9-1645.html
Overall, I’ve been VERY pleased with the reaction and reader response since BLOODY LIES came out last summer. Most gratifying, the book has been well-received by other acclaimed true-crime authors. Many have given it glowing praise. Here’s just a couple of the most recent examples:
“John Ferak has done all first-time authors proud, and, really, he’s done all authors proud. He is a distinct credit to the craft. Let me say this as well … Mr. Ferak has made a contribution for all of us, and here is the message: If you are of official capacity, low, middle or high authority, and design a course of negligence and deceit at the cost of the innocent, one day someone will come along to tell what was done and expose just who did (or didn’t) do what.” — Jim Hollock, author of BORN TO LOSE: Stanley B. Hoss and the Crime Spree that Gripped a Nation.
“John Ferak’s bulldog approach to investigative reporting creates a page-turner that true crime fans will find difficult to fathom. The ineptitude of local law enforcement combined with a crooked CSI chief will leave readers shaking their heads in disbelief.”
